On this week’s show Pastor Joe Schimmel continues discussing an issue that is raised every year around this time – is it okay for Christians to celebrate Christmas? There are many charges made against celebrating Christmas, and while many of these are seemingly valid, what does scripture have to say about this subject? Is it okay to celebrate our Lord’s birth and the fact that God became a man to die for the sins of the world? In Part 5, the final episode in this series, Pastor Joe looks at the potential harm of teaching our children about Santa Claus instead of focusing their attention on Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Santa Claus is a modernised remnant of veneration of St Nicholas.
The problem is not Santa Claus but the absence of religious education in schools leading to many kids e.g. in the UK thinking that Santa Claus is a Bible character.
Hey joe,
Wanted to ask various questions about Christmas. In Jeremiah 10 it clearly states learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold: the y fasten it with nails and with hammer, that it not move. Is that not stating what we shouldn’t be doing with Christmas trees? Colossians 2:8 beware let any man spoile you through philosophies and Caine deceit, after the traditions of men , after the rudiments of the world , and not after Christ. Is this not a man made tradition? I don’t see the bible saying anything good about celebrating man made traditions. I see the mass misunderstanding. I really enjoy and thank you for what you do. But celebrating pagan or occult holy-days is against the word of God and Jesus Christ. I truly think that holy-days confuse or disrupt our connection to our Saviour.
God bless Owen
Hello Owen. Your concern is addressed in our broader Christmas series. If you haven’t already, please listen through all of the shows. FYI – You might be surprised to learn that Hanukkah is a man-made tradition, yet Jesus celebrated it in scripture.
